2018 Toyota Land Cruiser: A Detailed Look at My New Overlanding Beast

As a car enthusiast and writer for Car News, I’m always on the lookout for vehicles that offer a blend of practicality, capability, and driving excitement. Recently, I found myself needing something larger than my trusty Golf R, something that could comfortably accommodate my son, our ski gear, and our dog. Enter the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser.

Why the Land Cruiser?

My garage space is limited, ruling out larger SUVs like the Tahoe or Suburban. Having owned a GX470 previously, I wasn’t keen on the current Lexus design language or infotainment system. The Land Cruiser, with its legendary reputation for reliability and off-road prowess, seemed like the perfect fit. The split tailgate design, perfect for accessing gear on adventures, was just icing on the cake.

Finding the right Land Cruiser within my budget took time. After searching for a 2016+ model with the updated features I desired, I came across a low-mileage 2018 on eBay. It had desirable modifications like ARB skid plates, recovery points, and a Safari snorkel (although I’m not thrilled about the snorkel installation). Working with a broker, I traded in my Golf R and arranged for the Land Cruiser’s transport from San Diego.

Plans for Modification

While the Land Cruiser is already well-equipped, I have a few modifications in mind to personalize it and enhance its capabilities.

Wheels and Tires:

The 18-inch wheels will be replaced with a set of used TRD “Rock Warrior” 17-inch wheels wrapped in 285/70/17 Falken AT3W tires. These tires are known for their excellent snow traction and quiet on-road manners, essential for my ski trips.

Suspension:

To improve off-road performance and provide a more comfortable ride, I’ll be installing the popular Bilstein 6112/5160 suspension setup.

Interior Upgrades:

A Beat Sonic Apple CarPlay unit will replace the outdated factory head unit, seamlessly integrating modern technology. I’m removing the third-row seats to gain additional cargo space, a worthwhile trade-off since I rarely need the extra seating. Custom covers will conceal the mounting points in the floor and trim, maintaining a clean look.

Although I’m still awaiting the Land Cruiser’s arrival, I’m already impressed. The 2016+ refresh brought a modernized interior and welcome technological updates. The Land Cruiser’s reputation for bulletproof reliability and off-road capability gives me confidence for years of adventures to come.
