My test drive of the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S almost didn’t happen. With the car needing a set of special snow tires shipped from Germany, I was anxiously waiting for them to arrive. But when they finally did, I was able to experience the thrill of maneuvering 630 horsepower through snow, ice, and mud.
There’s something invigorating about confidently navigating challenging terrain in a powerful car with excellent tires and smart all-wheel drive. It makes you feel unstoppable.
This feeling of invincibility is prevalent throughout the entire car. From the well-insulated and well-protected interior to the supportive bucket seats, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S exudes power and confidence. It’s a car that makes you feel untouchable.
What Is It?
Before we delve deeper, it’s important to clarify that the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S is not an off-road vehicle. Instead, it’s a high-speed Autobahn cruiser that can handle light mountain climbing and muddy roads when necessary. With a luxurious interior, exceptional sound deadening, and remarkable power, the GT 63 S feels like sitting in a plush tank that offers excellent visibility.
Despite its classification as a “4-Door” by Mercedes-AMG, the GT 63 S is commonly referred to as a “coupe.” The car’s chassis is based on the E 63 S wagon, with additional steel and aluminum braces, an aluminum shear plate beneath the engine, three extra braces across the center tunnel, and a carbon fiber trunk floor.
Specs That Matter
Underneath the GT 63 S’s hood lies a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine that delivers an impressive 630 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. Power is transferred to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission. According to Mercedes-AMG, the GT 63 S can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds and has a top speed of 195 mph.
This V8 model also features rear-axle steering, providing a dynamic driving experience that makes the car feel more agile and maneuverable than its size suggests. With dimensions similar to a Porsche Panamera, the GT 63 S measures 199.2 inches in length and 76.9 inches in width.
What’s Great
One of the highlights of the GT 63 S is its spacious interior. With ample legroom in the backseat, even taller passengers can comfortably enjoy the ride. Additionally, the trunk impresses with its 16.3 cubic feet of cargo volume, allowing for a significant amount of luggage and belongings to be stored easily.
While the car’s closure sensor may be overly sensitive, resulting in the lid freezing when it detects even the slightest obstruction, the GT 63 S makes up for it with its impressive features and capabilities.
What’s Weak
The GT 63 S is equipped with an abundance of options, which can be overwhelming. From seat massages to interior lighting choices, the extensive menu of customizable settings may be excessive for some. However, these options can be set once and forgotten.
Furthermore, the Executive Rear Seat Package, which costs an additional $3,550, includes heated and cooled cupholders but surprisingly lacks a rear seat heater. This naming discrepancy raises questions about the package’s “executive” title.
Casual Driving
Behind the wheel of the GT 63 S, you’ll immediately feel the car’s size. However, thanks to rear-axle steering, maneuvering tight spaces becomes significantly easier. The ride, although firm even in Comfort mode, is something drivers can adjust to over time. The nine-speed automatic transmission boasts smooth upshifts, but deceleration and downshifts may produce slight shuddering. Despite this minor drawback, the car handles superbly overall.
The GT 63 S’s solid body, minimal roll, and all-wheel drive system—enhanced by snow tires—allow it to conquer snowy and muddy roads with ease. It provides a sense of capability and confidence, making it feel like a mighty polar bear, ready to tackle any challenge.
Aggressive Driving
The GT 63 S delivers impressive power. Although it’s a heavy car, it can accelerate rapidly. The engine generates a thrilling acceleration feel, and the powerful brakes bring the car to a stop quickly. The GT 63 S is more than just a straight-line performer—it offers agility and precise handling. With well-weighted steering and rear-axle steering, the car instills confidence, making it a joy to tackle on-ramps and enjoy the thrill of driving.
However, the abundance of gears can be a bit excessive, requiring frequent paddle shifting to find the ideal gear. Nonetheless, the GT 63 S’s active bolsters offer excellent support, enhancing the driving experience.
Value
While the base price of the GT 63 S is $159,000, the test vehicle I drove had nearly $27,000 worth of additional options, bringing the final price to $185,830. Some of these options may not be necessary, as the GT 63 S already offers an exceptional driving experience without them.
Considering the numerous onboard computers and mechanical components, long-term ownership costs may be a concern once the warranty expires. It’s uncertain how well the GT 63 S will hold its value, especially compared to previous models like the E60 BMW M5.
Verdict
The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S comes close to being the ultimate sports sedan. With its harmonic engine note, cohesive design, spacious interior, and outstanding performance, it offers an exceptional driving experience. Whether you’re running errands or pushing the car’s limits, the GT 63 S delivers both practicality and exhilaration, making it suitable for everyday tasks and thrilling journeys. However, with its impressive power, finding a safe and legal environment to unleash the car’s full potential may prove challenging.
If you’re seeking a refined powerhouse, the GT 63 S is the car for you. It combines power, luxury, and practicality, making it an excellent choice for enthusiasts who embrace both exhilarating drives and everyday functionality.
