2014 MINI Cooper: A Revelation on Puerto Rican Roads

As a car enthusiast and writer for Car News, I’m always on the lookout for the latest automotive advancements and exhilarating driving experiences. So, when the opportunity arose to test drive the new 2014 MINI Cooper and Cooper S in Puerto Rico, I jumped at the chance. Little did I know, this trip would be a revelation.

First Impressions of the F56 MINI Cooper S

My journey began with a hint of apprehension. The F56 generation I was about to pilot represented the foundation for the next decade of MINIs. The stakes were high. Add to that the twisty, narrow roads of Puerto Rico, often shared with unfazed stray dogs, and I had my work cut out for me.

My initial test car, a Volcanic Orange Cooper S with an automatic transmission, didn’t exactly inspire confidence from an enthusiast’s perspective. However, as soon as I hit the gas, my doubts vanished. This car was something special.

A Handling Masterpiece

The first thing that struck me was the handling. The F56 felt noticeably sharper and more responsive than its predecessor, the R56. This enhanced agility is largely thanks to a reduction in unsprung weight and a revamped rear suspension, featuring a new hollow anti-roll sway bar.

MINI engineers have focused on creating a suspension system that strikes a perfect balance between comfort and performance. The result is a car that feels composed even on the most demanding roads. Gone is the sensation of the car fighting against you at the limit. Instead, the F56 feels communicative, balanced, and forgiving.

Steering and Torque Steer

The electronically assisted steering system is entirely new, offering significantly more feedback than the R56. While not quite on par with the legendary R50/R53, it’s a substantial step in the right direction and addresses a common criticism of recent MINIs.

What about the notorious torque steer that plagued the R5X chassis? Simply put, it’s gone. I pushed both the Cooper and Cooper S hard, and the torque steer that once threatened to wrest control from the driver has been completely eradicated.

Power and Performance: Cooper S vs. Cooper

Cooper S Engine and Transmission

The 2.0L engine in the Cooper S is a gem, delivering power comparable to the previous 1.6L JCW engine. Mid-range torque is where this engine shines, making it incredibly tractable and enjoyable in everyday driving.

The revised six-speed automatic transmission deserves praise as well. While not as quick or refined as the 8-speed ZF unit found in BMWs, it’s a marked improvement over its predecessor. Shifts are crisp and smooth, and downshifts are significantly quicker with less driveline shunt.

Cooper Engine and Transmission

Stepping into the Cooper, I was eager to experience the new 3-cylinder engine. With torque figures matching the original R53 Cooper S, this engine had big shoes to fill.

This new powerplant is a delight to rev, feeling eager and responsive throughout the rev range. Paired with the slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission (a completely new design), the Cooper delivers one of the purest driving experiences I’ve had in a MINI. Even after hours of spirited driving, it still returned impressive fuel economy.

While the 1.5L three-cylinder engine sounds fantastic, the exhaust note is a bit too subdued for my liking. An aftermarket exhaust system could unleash its full acoustic potential.

Design: Evolution, Not Revolution

The F56’s design is perhaps its most polarizing aspect. The larger front overhang, a necessity to meet pedestrian safety regulations, is noticeable but becomes less jarring over time.

The rest of the design is classic MINI, with a few modern touches. The LED headlights and subtle creases along the bodywork give it a more purposeful stance. The overall effect is an evolution of the MINI design language, emphasizing sportiness and performance.

Interior and Technology: A Huge Leap Forward

The interior of the F56 is a revelation. Material quality is superb, easily on par with a BMW 3 Series. The Black Pearl Leatherette/Cloth combination in our Cooper S test car was particularly impressive, with a distinctly premium feel.

The new sport seats are a massive improvement, offering excellent support and comfort.

Infotainment and Technology Features

The 8.8-inch navigation system is a must-have. It’s fast, responsive, and features a high-resolution display. The interface is intuitive and easy to use.

The head-up display (HUD) is another excellent feature. It projects vital information directly into the driver’s line of sight, minimizing distractions.

The optional 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is phenomenal, delivering crisp audio quality and plenty of bass.

The Verdict: The Best MINI Yet?

The 2014 MINI Cooper and Cooper S represent a significant step forward for the brand. It’s a more refined, more technologically advanced, and more enjoyable car to drive than its predecessor.

While some may lament the larger front overhang and the slightly subdued engine note, the overall package is undeniably impressive. MINI has managed to create a car that appeals to both the heart and the head, delivering a thrilling driving experience while also being practical and efficient.
